The Autism Epidemic
Applying engineering thinking to life
In the early 1980s the incidence of autism was 1 in 10,000 births. Today it is estimated to range from approximately 1 in 150 to as high as 1 in 50 births. What is the cause of this catastrophic epidemic? Some believe that vaccinations are to blame. However the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that autism is triggered by vaccinations only in rare cases, related to a mitochondrial disorder [1].

WCA methodology teaches us, among other things, to not just look for a single "silver bullet," but to consider all significant variables. By ignoring variables that could amplify the potentially negative effects of vaccinations, the CDC may be derelict in its duties to the public.

In addition the the mitochondrial disorder, other variables include the synergistic effect of mercury and aluminum in the vaccines [2], the age when given the vaccine and the number or vaccines in a single dose [3], and the synergistic effect of the presence of high-intensity wireless RF [4].

Because of the potentially severe penalty to be paid by unskeptically accepting the CDC's position, it may be wise to apply some preventive measures until the science is settled. The following guidelines are recommended by Donald W. Miller, Jr. [5]:

  1. No vaccinations until your child is two years old.
  2. No vaccines that contain thimerosal (mercury).
  3. No live virus vaccines.
  4. The following vaccines should be given one at a time (not as a combination vaccine), every six months, beginning at age 2:
    1. Pertussis (acellular, not whole cell)
    2. Diphtheria
    3. Tetanus
    4. Polio (the Salk vaccine, cultured in human cells)

Yet another worry for the beleaguered design engineer
RANDOM CIRCUIT ZAPS?
"A small percentage of apparently random failures in fielded systems can be attributed to single-event burnout ... Single-event burnout (SEB) is a failure mode for all power semiconductors, even at sea level ... SEB is a well-documented phenomenon, yet it is still relatively unknown outside of the traction drive and aerospace design communities."

NEWS BULLETS
Seattle-based "Spam King" Robert Soloway, who generated tens of millions of spam emails between 2003 and 2007, was captured last year and charged by US prosecutors with identity theft, money laundering, mail fraud, and email fraud. Soloway pleaded guilty on 14 March 2008 and is in prison awaiting sentence.

FOR DESIGN MASTER™ SUBSCRIBERS
Formulas with a large number of zero-sensitivity variables (e.g. due to clipping from using the IF function) can sometimes take a long time to resolve. V7.2.7 will now automatically interrupt such calculations and allow the user to optionally skip the resolving process.
Let DACI help you toughen up those circuit designs:

[2] "Another important factor with regard to mercury on the mind ... is synergistic toxicity -- mercury's enhanced effect when other poisons are present. A small dose of mercury that kills 1 in 100 rats and a dose of aluminum that will kill 1 in 100 rats, when combined have a striking effect: all the rats die. ... Doses of mercury that have a 1 percent mortality will have a 100 percent mortality rate if some aluminum is there. Vaccines contain aluminum." -Donald W. Miller, Jr., MD, "Mercury on the Mind"

Switch-Mode Power Supplies / SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs, by Christophe Basso (McGraw-Hill)
Recommended
We are happy to see Christophe Basso's newest book in print, Switch-Mode Power Supplies / SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs. We are happy because Mr. Basso infuses his treatment of SPICE with a wealth of design guidance and equations. This is not your typical "no thinking required" approach to SPICE, but is a well thought out and thorough treatment, earning it our Recommended rating.
SPICE can be extremely valuable when used carefully, particularly during the early stages of a complex design or analysis. For example, by exposing an impractical design approach up front, you can avoid wasting time and money downstream on needless prototyping, testing, and analysis. On the other hand, SPICE alone is not sufficient for design validation. As Mr.Basso makes clear (section 1.3), "SPICE does not replace the breadboard phase, nor does it shield you from writing equations or understanding electronics. It looks like a simple sentence, but the author has often been confronted by designers showing boards in the trash and claiming, 'But SPICE said it would work!!'"

With this caution firmly in mind, Switch-Mode Power Supplies will be an excellent resource. The books numerous equations can be easily transported into Design MasterTM worksheets, where tolerances can be assigned and a worst case analysis can be done to complete the design.

Switch-Mode Power Supplies is evidence of an enormous amount of high-quality work, for which Mr. Basso should be congratulated.
